Warning against internet sale of weight loss medication
Following the finding in the United States of America (USA) of counterfeited Alli, a medicinal product used for weight loss, the National Medicines Agency hereby warns consumers on the danger related to purchase of medicinal products from unauthorised websites.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been working together with the original product manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in result of reports of counterfeits of the medicinal product Alli, which, although not found in Europe, is potentially available to buyers by means of the Internet.
Alli is a non-prescription medicinal product (OTC) and the authentic product contains orlistat as an active substance.
Laboratory testing of the counterfeited medicinal product Alli, 60mg capsules (packages of 120 capsules) has shown that they contained sibutramine instead of orlistat. Last week, in result of proof suggesting increased risk of nonfatal stroke and heart attack, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended suspension of marketing authorisations for all sibutramine containing medicinal products.
We strongly recommend against purchase of medicinal products through the Internet.
Counterfeited Alli may be recognised from the actual product by the following:
· Absence of the batch series code on the secondary packaging;
· The inner protection foil under the plastic cap bears no inscription, whereas the original product bears the inscription “sealed for your own protection”;
· Counterfeited capsules contain white powder instead of small white granules.
The true product is only available in smaller packages of 42, 60, 84 or 90 capsules each and not in packages of 120 capsules. Each genuine capsule is clearly marked “Alli”. Counterfeited capsules bear no marking whatsoever.
In case of concern, consumers are advised to consult with their doctor or pharmacist or report to the National Medicines Agency any suspected counterfeited Alli, together with the details of the website from which it has been purchased.
